First Aid

A brief summary of my AGM item:

First Aid training is a very good thing - if you can, get training through work. More information at
I hope to be arranging a cycling first aid course in the near future - information will be posted.

Meanwhile, take some responsibility:
Carry a card with you with In Case of Emergency details - contact name and number, any relevant medical details
On your phone add under ICE your emergency contact number
Warn the ride leader if you have any relevant medical issues: Heart issues / medication causing bleeds, epilepsy, diabetes, major allergies &c.

If you have a smartphone add the what3words app - . This may help you relay your location to the emergency services, along with Google Maps. Grid references are no longer widely used by the control rooms.

First Aid Kits:
First Aid is for serious emergencies - fine if you wish to carry them, but plasters, aspirin and sun cream are not part of a statutory first aid kit. 
I carry:
My phone (the most important item)
A pair of vinyl gloves
A mouth-to-mouth shield
An emergency rescue blanket (to keep the patient warm, and for modesty)
A length of clingfilm wrapped around a pencil or similar. This will do to cover scrapes & minor cuts, and also act as a bandage.
If you are venturing off-road, a pair of tick tweezers might be included -
For night rides and wilderness rides I would add a head torch and a whistle.
Washing a wound liberally with a water bottle is perhaps better than wiping with an antiseptic wipe. It doesn't matter what's in the bottle.
A jersey can be used to staunch serious bleeding, an inner tube makes a good sling.

However, the two most important parts of First Aid - Initial actions prior to treatment, and CPR are best learnt from a trainer, and this will give confidence to deal with a situation.
